🦹🏼♀️ 8 Strategies for Turning Imposter Syndrome into a SuperPower
Imposter Syndrome - Tips for Leaders and Professionals
Imposter syndrome is a complex topic. This feeling, no stranger to many of us, makes us doubt our worth and capabilities, despite a track record of success. How does imposter syndrome uniquely affects women in leadership roles? Is it truly a roadblock, holding them back from realizing their full potential? Or, could we reframe imposter syndrome to serve as a stepping stone to something greater? I believe this is a question worth exploring.
The Imposter Phenomenon Defined
Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes coined the term “imposter syndrome” back in the late ’70s. It is the persistent sensation of being a fraud, despite tangible proof of competence. For women in leadership, first time founders across, and professionals across various fields alike, this phenomenon can cast a shadow, even when they’ve achieved remarkable success to get where they are in their careers.
The Career Ceiling Perspective
Let’s begin by examining how imposter syndrome can be a formidable obstacle, not just for individuals, but for organizations as well:
Self-Doubt:
Imposter syndrome shakes the very foundation of self-confidence, breeding uncertainty. The more responsibility you take on, the more visibility you have on project/team— the greater the importance of executive skills such as storytelling, influencing, giving feedback, facilitation groups, and conveying confidence during difficult times. Leaders need to project this confidence in their own abilities and reassure and demonstrate competence to their teams and colleagues.Perfectionism:
Many grappling with imposter syndrome set impossibly high standards for themselves. Many of my coaching clients are hyper-achievers, Type A, and generally accustomed to winning. Launching a startup and tackling complex leadership roles will inevitably put you face-to-face with conflict and failure. This perfectionist mindset can lead to burnout and reduced productivity.Risk Aversion:
Fear of failure is a heavy burden and significantly reduces your opportunity set. Those plagued by imposter syndrome might avoid taking risks or embracing new opportunities, which hinders innovation and growth within an organization and certainly within an individual career trajectory.Downplaying Achievements:
Many women (and I see this in immigrant founder clients) downplay their accomplishments. They undersell how incredible they are and rely on their work, their outcomes, and their results to speak for them. They may be attributing part of their success to luck or external factors. Both behaviors undermine credibility and self-worth. If you do not own your story and lead the telling of it— no one else will. Worse yet, others will make up a story about you.
The Step Into Your Superpower Perspective
Now, let’s shift our lens, let’s REFRAME Imposter Syndrome, to the transformative potential of imposter syndrome as a SuperPower:
Drive for Excellence:
Remarkably, imposter syndrome can be a driving force for excellence. It compels individuals to continually strive for greatness, which can lead to improved individual and team performance.Increased Self-Awareness:
Those wrestling with imposter syndrome often possess heightened self-awareness. They actively seek feedback and engage in self-improvement efforts, which can lead to personal growth and enhanced skills.Empathy and Humility:
Experiencing imposter syndrome fosters empathy and humility. Leaders and professionals who have faced their own insecurities tend to be more relatable and compassionate, improving team dynamics and morale.Resilience:
Triumphing over imposter syndrome cultivates resilience. Those who’ve navigated self-doubt are better prepared to tackle future challenges head-on, contributing to a more resilient and adaptable organizational culture.
